 Ukraine
is one of the largest producers of cereals, historically known
as the "granary of Europe", which in 2006 reached
12% of the total value of exports, which consisted of alimentary
products. The positive trade surplus of the Ukrainian agro-food
balance is more than tripled over the past decade, and on trade
in agricultural products has more than doubled.
70% of the country is agricultural land which amounts to 42
million hectares of useful agricultural area, with the possibility
of producing 100 million tonnes per year. Ukraine is the major
producer of cereals, among which stands out the grain, as well
as millet, sorghum, corn, rye, oats, barley and rice. Italy
is the third largest buyer of goods exported from Ukraine, including
grain in large quantities and varieties.
